This large project was intending to provide the city of Xining (2 Millions peoples, on the Tibetan Plateau ) with a major commercial street on the major axis of the innercity fabric.
J Planning was commissioned by the local goverment to lead the preliminary studies and proposals for an efficient reconversion of this very disparate street into a modern, attractive and unified commercial street, to be made pedestrian in a few years.
This more than one and half kilometer street project was a way for our team to demonstrate its flexibility and effective approach combining urban planning, architecture, urban furniture and elements, lighting design and graphic/marketing strategies
The complete study gather more than 80 boards We will show some of them on
this blog
The Street connecting with the main public space in the center of the City

The plan and section of the Street revealing differences in shapes,
typologies and morphologies along the Street

The study brings forward the coexistence of multiple functions able to later
"feed" the pedestrian dynamics
A typical section and elevation emphasizing the lack of visual unity through
the Street, the exposure of the different buildings and the disturbance of the
advertising panel,s not coordinated.
The project of a new facade element applying to all street commercial
buildings, unifying and ordering the Street The general regularity of this
project will be smoothed by the different appropriations that will happen
leading to a variety of typologies led by the different stakeholder but
preserving the unity of the Street. Beside creating a clean and continuous
commercial first floor and an harmonious and dynamic thin "podium" , the design
gives structure and organization to 3 types of advertising, allows activities
to continues on the 2 upper floors and gives the direction toward a street
redevelopment integrating trees and a new custom made urban furniture that will
be a signature to the street. The modularity of the facade allow it to match
every building structural frame. The thinness and repetitiveness of the
elements allows as well a good control over the price.
Streetscape Views of the projected Street

The Lighting Design holds a prominent part in this kind of project and as a
determinant added value is deeply inegrated with the project and contribute
greatly to the feel of an integrated high quality commercial street

The Logo of the street has been designed by ourselves and presents a modernized version of the traditional diagonal cross patern easy to find everywhere in Xining.
